The world of entrepreneurship is filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. When you live in a world where you take massive risk every day, there are bound to be days when that risk does not pay off in the way you had hoped. On those days, you're going to feel rough. So here are three things to remember on days like that.
1. There are things you HAVE accomplished- From experience I can tell you that this is the easiest thing to forget when things are not going well. It's easy to forget the fact that you did raise 10k when your goal was 75k, or that you did complete 10 pages of that script even though it's not done. Whenever you are feeling like the end is nowhere in sight, it's a good practice to look back at what you have done. This can help give you that extra push to keep going.
2. You are not alone- You've spent the time building and cultivating a network and that network is there to support you at times like these. The worst time to seek solitude is when you are at your lowest. Take the time to reach out to trusted friends and colleagues and let them know the challenges you are experiencing. They may have advice or thoughts on new ways to move forward. They may also have ideas about different ways to approach your current challenge. So reach out, you'll be sure to find support.
3. The answer is in the problem- No matter what hardship you are facing, the only way to fix the problem is to look at it again. It's tempting to just get upset about the fact that something you tried didn't work and to walk away from it, but just like a math problem in school, you need to go back and look at the problem again to be able to solve it. You won't just magically get the answer. Think about whatever hasn't worked and ask yourself what you can do that will work. Ask what you haven't tried.
For every person who throws down something broken in disgust, there's someone who picks up that same thing and makes something brilliant. Don't forget that failure is nothing more than an opportunity to learn. So go on back to that place and give it another go.
We all have days when we feel like giving up, but the difference between those who are successful and those who hope they'll be is the tenacity involved in pushing through the hard days.
You can do it.
Get back out there.
See you at the finish line.
Excelsior!
