Kevin Lee Allen

Fifteen years ago I was the president of the Chamber of Commerce in Montclair, NJ. Then, as now, there was a steeped decline in retail and too many vacancies. The vacancies helped to promote the idea that the area was not safe.

I went to the landlords and asked for the use of the store windows. Then I went to the museums, non-profits and individual artists and asked if they wanted display space. In my experience, as a set designer, I then helped them craft window displays with little or no investment.

This was a win-win all around. The landlords (especially those willing to invest in a light) found they were getting more 'looks' than before from prospective tenants. The exhibitors profited from increased visibility, I think a painting or two might have been sold. The neighboring stores benefited from increased traffic and interest in the area.

All at little or no cost.
