So last night I attended Week 2 of the Estrogenius Festival at Manhattan Theatre Source and I gotta tell you, it's one of the best one-act festivals I've seen in awhile. Granted, I know many people involved in the festival itself so, naturally, I would be supportive of their efforts. That being said, it's an amazing evening of theatre. So as I was walking out last night I sort of ran through my head why I enjoyed the shows so much and here's what I came up with:
1. Every show was short- If I didn't like a show I wouldn't have to wait long.
2. I saw a variety of acting styles- In a festival like that you get to see not only different actors, but also what happens when they're directed by someone with a different style.
3. It made me feel something- This, hands down, is the main factor in choosing a show to move forward. I have to get a lump in my throat or laugh so hard my stomach hurts. If I'm completely engaged I know that something's working.
There are a number of other reasons, but these are my top 3. We are in a tough time right now and history has shown us that when times are tough, there's usually an explosion in the art world. This festival is the first in many of those explosions and it's a great way to spend your weekend.
