This week's retro post is only a year old, but bears repeating again and again. Please do not do this.

Here's something I see happen a lot and it's a sure-fire way to lose someone's respect in under 30 seconds. So if you're doing this: Stop and if you see someone doing this, let them know the damage they are causing.
This is the scenario: Someone in a higher position sees you at a party and starts talking to you. A few minutes later someone of importance walks in and while you are in the middle of the conversation, they say, "hold on" and then go and greet that person turning their back on you and starting a whole other conversation.
I'll be the first to tell you that you need to give your donors, supporters, and those in authority high consideration, but NEVER do it at the expense of your attention to the person you are talking to. It's rude and you never know who that person knows.
The right way to handle this if you are in the position of power?
Introduce the person coming into the conversation to the person you are chatting with no matter what level they are at.
They will appreciate the intro and the consideration and you will show them that you respect their time.
Remember, you and only you can prevent networking No No's.
