This weekend, I was home in RI and as usual I went to see one of my best friend's shows. Afterwards, we discussed a lot of things and one thing that came up was the idea of helping. Like many of my colleagues I spend a lot of time giving of my time, my attention, and my expertise and sometimes in the process I forget to take care of myself.
I was gently reminded that this does not have to be the case. That if I want to take a break from responding to email, working on a project, or taking meetings, I am allowed to. The main battle is giving myself permission to let that happen.
It's really easy to feel guilty about all of this, but the more work I do, the more I realize that without those moments of rest, I'm not nearly as effective in the work I am doing.
So as with all the lessons I am learning on my journey, I share this one with you today.
It's Monday and I have a ton of things to do. I will be taking breaks today though. I will be eating lunch and dinner and having some downtime.
And that's ok.
How about you? What are you doing for yourself today?
If the answer is nothing, you may want to change that.
