After watching the latest season of Game of Thrones, it should come as no surprise that armor has been on my mind lately. The importance of armor in keeping someone from getting hurt is paramount and if you are out of your armor, something like this happens.
That being said, I wanted to introduce to you all a new concept I've dubbed Karma Armor. The idea being that if you take the time to establish a significant amount of karma, it helps you when things go really bad. So what are some ways to build up your karma armor and not end up like Renly Baratheon?
1. Answer calls for favors- Every once in a while someone will reach out to you and ask if you can show up for something at the last minute, let them borrow something for the day, or put in a good word for them with someone. Make the time to do it. You never know when you may need the same thing. Being there in a pinch for someone means that you're less likely to be pinched later.
2. Connect others- Those of you who know me well, know that I do this all the time. The most important thing about this is that you may not have what someone needs, but may know someone who does. Don't hoard those connections. Share them and set up mutually beneficial meetings.
3. Do good things just because- Don't try and game the system. If you play the game of favors, you'll lose (Sorry, couldn't resist that one) Just help and support people whose work you enjoy and don't worry about what comes out of the interaction.
Ultimately, if you want your karma armor to be strong, the key is going out and doing as much good as possible. If you look hard enough there are opportunities to help people every day. If you are on a list- serve, see if someone is asking for something you have. If you're on twitter, search the word "need" and see what comes up. There's a lot you can do and people appreciate it more than you may ever know.
A perfect example is this blog. Every once and a while someone comments or retweets, but the most effusive comments come from people I had no idea were reading it. It's really cool to find out that someone reads this and that some of these posts have helped others, and I just write what comes to mind each day and share it.
So take a little time today to fortify that karma armor, afterall,
Winter is coming.
Ok, ok. I couldn't resist again.
