This week's A.P.T. is dedicated to make sure you all know about the amazing organization Opening Act. I had the pleasure of sitting down with their deputy director and hear about the incredible work they do. See below and be sure to check out their next event. It's going to be fantastic.
Thanks so much to Michael for highlighting Opening Act/our Benefit Play Reading on the blog!
- Opening Act provides free, after-school theater programming to ten of NYC's most under-served public high schools. Opening targets NYC's highest-need high schools: schools with less than 62% of students graduating in 4 years, less than 30% of students reading on grade level, and schools that have a marked lack of theater programming. Through our theater programs, Opening Act gives students the opportunity to gain confidence, pride, and the knowledge that they can succeed at anything in life. To learn more about our programs, please visit www.openingactnewyork.org.
- Opening Act's Annual Benefit Play Reading raises the critical funds necessary to sustain our theater programming in NYC's most under-served schools. Our 6th Annual Benefit Play Reading will be held on Monday, May 7 on BROADWAY at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre with Tony Award-winning actresses Stockard Channing (Other Desert Cities, The West Wing) and Laura Benanti (Gypsy, Women on the Verge...) in Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies' Collected Stories. http://www.openingactnewyork.org/events/star-studded-benefit-play-reading/
- Past years' Benefit Play Readings have included the talents of Edie Falco (Nurse Jackice, The Sopranos) and the entire cast of Side Man in a 10th anniversary reunion reading, Bernadette Peters (Follies, Gypsy) and John Dossett (Gypsy, HBO's John Adams) in AR Gurney's Love Letters, and most recently Cynthia Nixon (Wit, Sex and the City) and John Slattery (Mad Men, Rabbit Hole) in the quirky comedy Hate Mail. To see photos of past Benefit Play Readings, please visit our photo page on our website: http://www.openingactnewyork.org/gallery/
- All proceeds will go to benefit Opening Act's work in city schools. Tickets range from $100-$500 and be purchased at http://www.telecharge.com/BehindTheCurtain.aspx?prodid=8928.
And thanks again for letting us tell you all about Opening Act! We hope to see you at the show!
